GlossaryCarbon sequestration

Carbon sequestration

Carbon sequestration, also known as carbon capture, is the process of absorbing and storing carbon (CO₂) from the atmosphere in soils, forests and oceans.

What is carbon sequestration?

Carbon sequestration, also known as carbon capture, is the process of absorbing and storing carbon (CO₂) from the atmosphere. There are various methods of carbon sequestration, including natural sequestration, which refers to processes by which carbon is stored in forests, soils and oceans. For example, when organic material decays in the soil, it forms stable carbon compounds that can remain in the soil for long periods of time. This process is called carbon sequestration in soil organic matter.

In regenerative agriculture, practices such as improved crop rotation and organic fertilization lead to increased carbon sequestration in the soil. This allows our soils to be used as an effective tool against climate change.
