Organic farming
What is organic farming?
Organic farming, also known as ecological agriculture, is an agricultural production system based on the promotion of biodiversity, the cycling of nutrients, natural pest control and the preservation of soil fertility. In contrast to conventional agriculture, it avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and instead relies on natural processes and materials, such as permaculture and humus building.
A central idea behind organic farming is to operate in harmony with nature. Organic farming often regards an organic farm as a largely self-contained organism and takes a holistic approach. In Germany, organic farming is supported by various laws such as the Organic Farming Act and the Federal Organic Farming Program
The principles of organic farming are:
- A nutrient cycle on the farm that is as closed as possible (own farm as feed and nutrient basis)
- Maintaining and increasing soil fertility
- Keeping animals in a particularly species-appropriate way
